Unique Designs Available upon request
Most of my carvings are created from seasoned wood located in the mountains of Perry County. Much of it comes from the Conocheague (we pronounce it - Con-o-co-jig) mountain on which I live. I also carve some kiln dried wood. Each piece is uniquely crafted using mostly my Stihl chainsaws. I use a 261C for large pieces, my MS 180, and my MS170s with carving bar for adding detail.
Due to the nature of wood continually expanding and contracting depending on its environment, moisture content, and sap content, carvings will dry and crack over time. That's natural. Carvings can dry and crack quicker if kept indoors. I believe the cracks simply add character. Each piece is carved based on the checks in the wood. I do my best to predict where those cracks will form and carve the piece so that if additional checking occurs, it won't affect the main features of the carving. However, if you are not satisfied with your carving, please contact me.
Please note
***** If you are looking for a piece of artwork that is perfect then chainsaw carving might not be for you. These carvings will crack and check.
If a carving is completed in the round (the whole round log), the wood is going to crack somewhere from the pith or heart of the wood outward. This is unavoidable. Some carvers will actually carve a line from the center out all the way to the bottom of the carving in the back, to deter checking anywhere else in the piece.
Some of my carvings are carved from log halves or quarters to deter major checking of the wood. If you are interested in a carving, call me and I can tell you what kind of wood is used in the carving and how to maintain it.
********If you purchase a carving and it cracks, I will fix it once and only charge for materials used. if you would like your carving fixed or recoated after that, I will charge time and materials.
These carvings are like any other wood product, they require maintenance. See below for tips and tricks to help you keep your carving beautiful.
Actual prices of carvings will vary depending on size, detail, and materials used. Some prices are posted with the gallery pictures. No 2 carvings are ever the same.
Tips and Tricks -
1. Set your carving up off the floor or ground so it doesn't draw damp.
2. If your carving cracks, there are several things you can do. You can use any number of wood fillers such as wood glue and shims, sawdust mixed with wood glue, or you can use any kind of wood putty. JB Weld makes an easy-to-use option that dries quick. I prefer shims, sawdust and wood glue. Remember to sand it before painting or applying your finish.
3. Also, remember wood is natural. it expands and contracts just like warm sun on a tin roof.
I usually paint the cracks but if your carving develops a large crack, use one of the above methods to fix or reach out. I will gladly help you.
4. If you have any questions about your carvings, please reach out. I will be happy to help.
5. The sun is the hardest of the elements on carvings. If your carving it outside in the weather, it is going to require routine maintenance.
The snowman sitting outside my shop is painted and has been out in the weather for 2+ years. He is weathered and is still darned cute.
